I really wasn't going to do a day 3 update on Connections Academy, but when I was looking for honest, no bars hold, truth on anyone's first year experience it was impossible to find. In my previous post, we all know Monday was more than challenging; Tuesday was a whole lot smoother. Tuesday evening, as I was putting my challenging 7-yr-old son to bed we had a really good talk about team work and cooperation. I was really, really excited for Wednesday. It started out great, 45 minutes later, I think my son who was really going to try to cooperate, was abducted by aliens. After an hour-and-a-half, of fighting and arguing, and just plain being obstinate, I followed some advice, took a step back and sent him outside to play for a good 30 mins. This helped for a whole of 5 mins. Today, he had to finish writing his final draft for language arts about a place he would like to see. He so much time whining and telling me how he couldn't do it, that he could have written it 10 times. This paper wasn't anything elaborate, just a few sentences about what he "will see", what the "weather will be like", and who "he will see". I had it, I temporarily lost my "cool, calm and collected" self.
I went up to my room and locked myself in the bathroom for about 10-minutes. I know 10 whole minutes is not very long. I find it impossible to take time for myself, and I had a 6th grade daughter who was and has been working her little butt off down the stairs. I also was worrying about what my 4 and 7-yr-old sons were doing.
Coming down the stairs feeling a little low for my show of weakness, I was pleasantly surprised to find my son had finished, in his best work, his final draft. The rest of the day went much better. He did his work without much complaining. Maybe throwing a temper tantrum once-in-awhile works, it is a solution I don't intend on trying again. My husband and I decided to try this because we just weren't excited about their education in regular public school, especially the crazy ways they are teaching math now. That is for another blog. Luckily we live in a state who is planning on withdrawing from Common Core, that again is another blog post. My husband and I are going to see this through, it will get better, I am just hoping sooner rather than later.
