My daughter's day. My daughter is the one I spend most of my time planning how each day is going to go. We started off using Easy Peasy, but then I really needed to customize more of her education. Some of the books used on Easy Peasy, she just didn't like. Reading is important. I know I don't enjoy reading, when it is something I find boring and uninteresting. Yesterday we went to the library and she got the 3rd Percy Jackson book, I believe it is called "The Titan's Curse". We will be using this for her reading enjoyment, and along with her new writing curriculum. Below is what the book's cover looks like.
She really enjoyed the movies, so I am hoping she will like the next book as well. She needed work with writing, this is a skill I found in school they don't really emphasize greatly, at least not the grammar, sentence structure, etc. I am not blaming the teachers or the school, I just believe that they don't have the extra time to spend on this with everything else going on. After doing some research online, I found the series called "The Complete Writer". She is using the "Writing with Skill - Level One", which is for grade levels 5-8.
We started lesson one this week. So far I love it, it is step-by-step and written to the student. Lesson one deals with writing summary phrases, basically organization, before you write. The first few lessons are all about basic organization, which is perfect for us. Well she had a bit of trouble coming up with summary phrases, so we will be using passages out of "The Titan's Curse", to practice until I feel she is mastering it. You need a good foundation before you can greatly write anything. I am excited to have found this book! I may even buy the one for my 2nd grade son. I believe the series for younger students is called "Writing with Ease."
A typical day of math lessons for her is Khan Academy. I usually assign her 2-4 lessons and have her do 1 mastery challenge, depending on whether or not she is having trouble grasping a concept. I also use MobyMax with her just to judge what level she is at and to gauge her progress. We also use supplemental worksheets when she needs the extra practice.
History and Science, we follow Easy Peasy. Next year we will be using "Mystery of History" volume 1 for History for all kids. I am slowly finding curriculum and piecing things together as I feel more confident and knowledgeable about their different learning styles.
Art and Music we kind of wing it. My husband did take her in last night and got her signed up for piano lessons! She is excited about this. Easy Peasy has a pretty good music program, art I find ideas on Pinterest or use Easy Peasy. Pinterest is great for art and craft ideas. I think once it warms up outside we are going to do the crayons on canvas, then I am going to use those in our eventually newly designed media/play/guest room.
She has come a long ways this year. She was very unsure of herself when it came to math, now she is doing some 7th grade level stuff on KhanAcademy. There are still areas where she struggles, but being able to spend the time she needs to understand fully has tremendously increased her confidence and her abilities. Math is just one of those subjects, that you have to grasp one concept before you can move to the next. This year has definitely had it's ups and downs, but I am so glad we decided to do this. It is definitely not a cake walk.
