Homeschooling high school is terrifying me. I am not going to lie. At the same time, I wonder why it is. I went to high school, I finished high school, I should be able to get my daughter through it. It's not like something I have never, ever done before. Deep down, I know I can do this. What is terrifying is all the people who have no confidence in my ability to do so. It is the doubters, the "mean girls/boys" that are shaking my confidence. I am not going to let them. Why am I letting them project their own doubts on me, I can totally do this. It is going to be tumultuous at times, when is life always smooth sailing. It's taking the risks that can make us soar. I have our curriculum picked out for the most part, the great thing about homeschooling is - if it doesn't work, you can always try, try again with something new.
Without further ado, here are our 9th grade curriculum choices.
Language Arts
Math
Science
Language Arts
- Literature - Some from AmblesideOnline.org (for the classics), some literature recommendations from Pinterest, and books she actually will read.
- Writing - Outside Writing Class, we are sending her to an actual class for writing.
- Grammar - Easy Grammar and Daily Grammar from SchoolHouseTeachers.com. Easy Grammar is separate and not from SchoolHouseTeachers.
- Spelling - Spelling from SchoolHouseTeachers.com, I love their spelling program!
Math
- My first choice is Learn Math Fast. I love these books, they are simple, no ridiculously complicated math in these books.
- My second choice is Teaching Textbooks Algebra I. This was an impulse decision, and I got a great deal on the whole set. It is version 1.0, so no interactive problems on the computer. This was a little disappointing, but it was still a great buy. My fault for not doing the research and knowing there were two versions.
Science
- We will be using Biology through School House Teachers. Purchasing the annual membership through them, has been the best investment I have made since homeschooling the past 3 years. I wish I would have known about this wonderful resource sooner.
History
UPDATE (12/20/16): We love the Civil Rights course through SchoolHouseTeachers, it is just the right amount of information, with questions at the end of each day that really make them dig deeper into that time period.
- I am piecing together our history through School House Teachers. The first semester we are going to be using the Civil Rights course. I am still debating the 2nd half of the year.

Foreign Languages
Electives
- We are using Rosetta Stone Japanese. My kids are 1/8th Japanese and my daughter really wants to learn to speak, read and write it. We found a great deal last Christmas on the 3 level set.
Electives
- Photography. We are using it through School House Teachers. I can't tell you how excited I am about this course. I have looked through it and it is really in-depth for a high school course. I need to brush up on my photography skills, one of my passions, that I just don't have a lot of time for. I am super excited about this one.
We also do an outside gym class, we meet for park days, we aren't weird and unsocialized. We will even work in some art and music. Do adult coloring books count? Just kidding. I know some people love planning. I. Do. Not. Planning is super stressful to someone who likes to go with flow. Maybe that's why I have been so crabby the past 3 years. I am currently reading The Best Yes by Lysa TerKeurst, it is so good. Next on my list is Teaching From Rest by Sarah MacKenzie.
